About Our Fish & What Makes It Different
FAQ
Is your salmon really better than what I buy at the grocery store?
Yes, and we say that with complete confidence because we know exactly what makes the difference. Most wild salmon sold in grocery stores travels through multiple processors, distributors, and cold chain stops before it reaches the fish case. It may have been out of the water for days. Our salmon is caught by us, pressure bled and blast frozen on our boat the same day it comes out of the water, and shipped directly to your door. No middlemen, no mystery. The difference in flavor, color, and texture is something our customers notice the first time they cook it, and it is why so many of them never go back to store-bought.
What does "wild caught" actually mean, and why does it matter?
Wild caught means the fish lived its entire life in the open ocean, ate a natural diet of krill, small fish, and crustaceans, and was harvested from the wild. It was never raised in a pen, never given processed feed or antibiotics, and its color comes from its natural diet, not from synthetic dye added to its food. Farmed salmon, which makes up the majority of salmon sold in the United States, is a fundamentally different product with a compromised nutritional profile, higher omega-6 content, and a production process that relies on crowded conditions and chemical intervention. When you buy wild Alaskan salmon from Parker's, you are getting the real thing, exactly as nature made it.
What species of salmon do you sell?
We offer wild Alaskan King salmon (Chinook), Sockeye (Red), and Coho (Silver), depending on the season. Copper River King and Sockeye are available during the Copper River season in May and June and are among the most sought-after salmon in the world. Each species has its own flavor profile and fat content. If you are not sure which is right for you, reach out and we are happy to help you choose.
Is your salmon sustainable?
Alaska's fisheries are governed by the sustained yield principle, which is written directly into the Alaska State Constitution. That means fish populations must be managed scientifically to ensure healthy runs for future generations. Alaska wild salmon is one of the most sustainably managed seafood sources on the planet. On top of that, we use hook-and-line trolling, the most sustainable commercial salmon fishing method available, with the lowest bycatch rate of any large-scale technique.
What is pressure bleeding and why do you do it?
Pressure bleeding is the process of using a precise jet of clean, cold seawater to flush blood completely out of a fish's circulatory system immediately after it is caught. We insert a small pipette into the bloodline and use controlled water pressure to push blood out through the gill area until the flow runs completely clear. This must be done within minutes of the fish coming aboard while the heart still has reflex activity, which is why large commercial operations that catch fish in nets cannot do it. The fish have been dead too long by the time they are pulled from the water. Blood left in salmon flesh is the primary cause of fishy taste, dull color, soft texture, and shortened shelf life. Fully pressure bled salmon tastes cleaner, looks brighter, and keeps significantly longer in your freezer. We do this to every single fish. No exceptions.
What does blast frozen at sea mean, and is frozen fish actually as good as fresh?
Blast freezing drives the core temperature of the fish down to well below zero in a matter of hours, so fast that ice crystals do not have time to form inside the flesh cells. When fish freezes slowly, as it does in a standard freezer, those ice crystals rupture the cell walls and create that mushy texture you may have noticed with lower quality frozen fish. Blast freezing locks the fish in a perfect state with its texture, flavor, and nutrition fully intact. We blast freeze right on our boat at sea, while the fish is still at peak quality. Many people are surprised to learn that properly sea-frozen salmon is actually superior to the "fresh" fish at most grocery store counters, which may have been out of the water for a week or more before you see it. Fresh means nothing if the handling was poor. Our frozen fish is the standard that "fresh" fish should be held to.
Is your wild Alaskan salmon sushi grade?
Yes. Our salmon meets and exceeds every standard that defines sushi grade fish, and here is why that matters.
"Sushi grade" is not a government-regulated term. No agency officially certifies fish with that label. What it actually means is that the fish was handled with enough care, speed, and cold chain precision to be safe and high quality enough to eat raw.
Every Parker's salmon is pressure bled immediately after catch, which removes the blood that drives bacterial growth. It is then blast frozen at sea to well below zero the same day it is caught. The FDA recommends fish intended for raw consumption be frozen to -4°F for a minimum of seven days or to -31°F until solid. Our blast freezing process hits those temperatures at sea, at the peak of freshness, before the fish has been out of the water long enough to lose anything.
The result is sushi grade wild Alaskan salmon that arrives ready to eat raw, cure into gravlax, slice for poke bowls, or cook any way you like. If you love sushi, this is the salmon you have been looking for.
Do you use any preservatives, additives, or coloring?
Never. Our salmon is a single ingredient: wild Alaskan salmon. Nothing added, nothing artificial, nothing that should not be there. The vibrant color in our fish comes from the natural astaxanthin in the salmon's diet, just as it always has.
Do I have to subscribe, or can I place a one-time order?
You can do either. We offer both one-time purchases and a subscription option for customers who want regular deliveries on their schedule. The subscription saves you money and makes sure you never run out of the best salmon you have ever tasted. You are never locked in and can pause, adjust, or cancel any time with no fees and no hassle.
Can I skip a delivery or pause my subscription?
Absolutely. Just log into your account and manage your schedule before your next order processes. We ask that changes be made at least 48 hours before your next billing date. If you ever need help, we are a real family-run business and we are easy to reach.
How is the fish packaged and shipped?
Every order ships vacuum-sealed, individually portioned, and packed in an insulated box with dry ice to arrive at your door completely frozen. We ship via UPS and you will receive tracking information as soon as your order goes out. We stand behind every shipment. If anything arrives in less than perfect condition, contact us and we will make it right.
How does the subscription work?
Choose your box, choose your frequency, and we handle the rest. You will receive an email before each order charges so you always know what is coming and have time to make any changes. Log into your account any time to skip a delivery, change your products, update your address, or cancel. We want this to be completely flexible for your life, because we know schedules change and freezers fill up.
Which states do you ship to?
We ship to all 48 contiguous states. If you have questions about delivery to a specific location, reach out and we will do our best to help.
How long will my salmon stay good in the freezer?
Our pressure bled, blast frozen salmon stays at peak quality in your freezer for 12 to 18 months or more when kept at 0°F in its original vacuum-sealed packaging. For best results, thaw in the refrigerator overnight rather than in warm water.
What is the best way to thaw my salmon?
The best method is to move your portions from the freezer to the refrigerator the night before you plan to cook them. They will be perfectly thawed and ready to cook in the morning. If you are short on time, you can place the sealed vacuum bag in cold water for about an hour. We do not recommend thawing in warm water or in the microwave as this affects the texture of the fish.
What makes Copper River salmon so special?
Copper River King and Sockeye salmon are widely considered the finest eating salmon in the world, and the reason is biological. To reach their spawning grounds, these fish must travel 300 miles against the swift, glacier-fed current of the Copper River, climbing over 1,200 feet in elevation through the Alaskan mountains. To fuel that journey, they pack on extraordinary fat reserves in the open ocean — far more than salmon returning to shorter, easier rivers. That fat is rich, silky, omega-3-dense oil that runs through every layer of the flesh, giving Copper River salmon its signature buttery texture and depth of flavor. This is why it has earned the title "the wagyu of the sea." It is not a marketing phrase. It is biology.
When is Copper River salmon available?
The Copper River season runs from mid-May through June. It is a very short window, and supply is genuinely limited by what the river produces. We sea-freeze at peak season so you can enjoy Copper River quality year-round, but when the season's catch is gone, it is gone until the following year. If Copper River is on your list, do not wait.
Why do you sell pet treats?
Because pets are family. We have always believed that, and we did not see any reason why the same standard of quality we hold for our own table should not extend to the animals who share our homes. Most commercial treats are loaded with fillers, artificial preservatives, and ingredients you cannot pronounce. We already had access to the highest quality wild Alaskan salmon on earth, so it made complete sense to use it to make something genuinely good for our furry family.
What are the health benefits of wild salmon treats for dogs?
Wild Alaskan salmon is one of the richest natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which dogs cannot produce on their own and can only get meaningfully through their diet. Regular omega-3 supplementation in dogs is linked to a shinier, healthier coat and reduced shedding, less itchy, inflamed skin and fewer hot spots, improved joint mobility especially in older dogs, better heart health and cardiovascular function, stronger immune system response, and sharper cognitive function as dogs age. Our treats are made from wild Alaskan salmon with no artificial additives, no fillers, and no ingredients you would not recognize. The same philosophy that drives our seafood for people drives our treats for dogs.
Are your pet treats safe for all dogs?
Our wild salmon treats are a natural, single-source protein that is gentle on digestion and suitable for most dogs including those with food sensitivities to common proteins like chicken or beef. Salmon is one of the most recommended novel proteins for dogs with allergies. As always, introduce any new treat gradually and consult your veterinarian if your dog has specific health conditions or dietary restrictions.
Can cats have the salmon treats too?
Yes. Cats are obligate carnivores and wild salmon is an excellent protein source for them as well. The omega-3 benefits apply to cats just as they do to dogs. Our treats are loved by both.
Why wild salmon specifically and not farmed?
For the same reasons we would never feed our family farmed salmon. Farmed salmon has a lower omega-3 profile because of its artificial feed, may contain residual antibiotics, and lacks the natural astaxanthin that makes wild salmon so nutritionally rich. If you care enough to give your dog a treat with real health benefits, it should come from wild fish. Ours always does.
What is freeze drying and why is it better than other methods of making dog treats?
Freeze drying is the gold standard of food preservation, and it is genuinely different from the dehydration or baking processes used to make most commercial pet treats. Here is what happens: the salmon is frozen solid first, then placed in a low-pressure chamber where the moisture is slowly removed through a process called sublimation — ice converts directly to vapor without ever becoming liquid. The result is a treat that retains the raw nutrition, natural flavor, and cellular integrity of the original fish almost entirely intact.
Research shows that freeze drying retains over 60% more nutrients than dehydration or cooking. When you dehydrate or bake fish, the heat breaks down delicate omega-3 fatty acids, degrades vitamins, and changes the protein structure. Freeze drying uses no heat, which means the EPA and DHA omega-3s that make wild Alaskan salmon so valuable for your dog's coat, joints, heart, and brain survive the process the way they should. The treats are also shelf-stable without any artificial preservatives — the moisture removal itself is what keeps them fresh. And because they are lightweight, crunchy, and intensely flavored, most dogs go absolutely crazy for them. They work beautifully as a daily treat, a training reward, or crumbled as a meal topper over your dog's regular food.
When you see a bag of Parker's freeze dried salmon treats, what you are holding is as close to a wild Alaskan salmon filet as a dog treat can possibly be.
Why do you make your treats in small batches, and does that actually make a difference?
It makes every difference in the world, and it is the reason we chose to do it this way from the start. Small batch production means we control every step of the process personally. We know exactly which salmon went into every batch, exactly when it was made, and exactly how it was handled from the moment it came off our boat to the moment it goes into a package headed to your dog.
Large-scale commercial pet treat production is a volume game. Ingredients come from multiple sources, batches run continuously, and quality control is a system rather than a set of eyes and hands that care. We are a family operation. Our name is on every bag. The same fish we pressure bleed and blast freeze for your family goes into the treats we make for your dog, and we treat every batch with the same attention we give to every salmon we catch. Small batches mean fresher product, tighter quality control, and a level of care that simply cannot exist at industrial scale. You will taste it — and your dog absolutely will too.
This is also why our treats are genuinely single-source. We know where every fish came from because we caught it ourselves. There is no supply chain mystery, no ingredient sourcing from unknown processors, and no shortcuts taken because no one is watching. We are always watching, because it is our catch, our name, and our family's standard.
